I truly feel that all human beings have something to bring to the table of life, something that each and everyone of us may utilize in one way or another. It may be the young med-school student wanting to contribute to humanity by helping heal the sick and mend the hurt or it may be that loser in prison who made all the wrong choices in life and is now a shining example to our youth as what NOT to do and how to conduct yourself. The diversity of humanity is truly amazing!
With that being said I wish to discuss something that I have loved since I can remember and that is the refreshing, wonderful, beautiful golden liquid known to man as “Beer”. It’s a short, very simple word, one syllable, and very easy to say. I can almost envision a primal set of language skills being developed by early man who discovered a piece of fruit fermenting on the ground…”ugh”, “mmuh”, “beer”, “grunt”,”snort” well…you get the picture. I love any and all beers in this world and while I do prefer some over others, beers, like our fellow human beings, are as diverse as the very world in which we reside.
Now, I am not a proponent of under-age drinking by any means and I would strongly suggest that our youth of today wait until an appropriate age to begin exploring the miracle that is beer. With that being said I must include the history and early beginning of my love affair with beer. I have very early memories of my Grandfather calling me over to him saying “Come over here Jeffrey…Grandpa has something for you” in his Finnish accent. I remember him spooning vanilla ice cream into my mouth that was a little bubbly, kinda frothy and very….”hoppy”? My sweet Grandpa was sharing his Root Beer Float with me only it was minus the “Root’! Another early beer memory that I have is of my cousin Kristen and I sneaking cans of beer from our parents coolers at one of the many family gatherings down at the Salton Sea in the Southern California desert probably around 1981 or 1982, which would have made me 11 or 12 years old. So that is a little bit about me and my beginnings concerning the drink of pure awesomeness known as BEER!
To all you beer lovers out there I ask the question-When do you remember having your first beer and thinking “Wow! This is good stuff!”?
